OSUNIX is an OpenSolaris technology based operating system that is entirely community driven, committed to building an entirely free and open source distribution and push innovation to the edge while still being stable and secure. Our community is small but fast growing with a core group of dedicated developers that slowly encompass all aspects of the operating system.
The OSUNIX community is driven by unity, generosity and great just isn't good enough [1]. This basis is what drives us to research and innovate instead of just following and repackaging like so many other distributions. In the world of open source there are many great technologies, but with unity and the generous time from countless volunteers we work together to build something even better.
OSUNIX is different in three big ways:
Many companies can dump their source into the public and make a lot of marketing hype, but how many really know how to build and be involved a community. Open source is a movement and not a marketing engine. Communication between developers and projects in the open can really help spur ideas and growth. Many times all sides have the same goals, but how is the decision made when there is a conflict? To answer this question partially ties into some of our technical goals, but more fundamentally ties into our larger understanding of being a part of the greater open source community.
Innovation and bug fixes whether large or small come at a price. The balance between being able to push the edge and stability doesn't come easy. Incrementally changing the entire toolchain or fixing a single line in the kernel can make a big difference. We plan to actively participate with research organizations and help mentor MSc and Ph.D students. Our tools from building, packaging and code reviewing will allow any who wants to participate to be able to do so easily. What's more we are laying the foundation for an unparalleled integration with many upstream vcs that allows for the best participation with upstream.
OSUNIX is a relatively new distribution and with that we're allowed to think outside the box. This also lays the foundation for not only looking at the problems of today, but setting a policy that great just isn't good enough. This strongly ties into our other goals of participating with research organizations and doing innovation that's a bit more than just a desktop widget.
"When I take on a new problem is that I'm not interested in how it's been done before. I only want to know, of all the constraints people tend to assume, which ones are actually fundamental and which ones are just habit?"
Jeff Bonwick
OSUNIX has an ambitious goal to unite the entire OpenSolaris technology community. By giving people the freedom to innovate outside of corporate constraints we open contributions from all around the world. OSUNIX is more than just developers, though. Each of these roles below serves as the pillars to which our community stands.
OSUNIX community welcomes everyone at any experience level. So even if you can't fix our most challenging bugs feel free to send us a friendly hi.
